The relationship between age and wellbeing has been a contentious area of academic enquiry. This debate is discussed, with an especial focus on the various sources of debate, before addressing them in a new, robust and transparent way. Work from different academic disciplines is discussed in pursuit of reasons why our wellbeing seems to follow a particular path, on average, as we age. Of particular note here are ideas and work from psychologists and psychotherapists. In general, the presentation aims to show that the topic of age, ageing and wellbeing is far more interesting than whether a particular pattern is found or not, and that much is still unknown. Rather than being a presentation of one particular article or study, the presentation aims at giving a ‘state-of-the-art’ overview, including an indication of worthwhile future research questions.
