ISQOLS Webinar,

"Housing and Wellbeing"

Presenter: Dr. Arthur Grimes

Wednesday, 14 May 2025

9:00 am CEST, 7:00 pm NZST

People spend much of their day in their own home; they also spend much of their budget on housing. Hence housing quality, location and housing expenses are major contributors to their overall wellbeing. In this talk, I discuss the results of several empirical analyses of how people’s housing circumstances influence their subjective wellbeing. One aspect that will be emphasized is how wellbeing may differ according to a person’s tenure status (homeowner, private renter, public renter). Tenure status may affect security of tenure, housing quality, housing expenditure and capital gains. Each of these aspects is hypothesized to impact the resident’s wellbeing. Many of the empirical examples are based on research conducted in New Zealand; references will also be made to the broader international literature. The talk will emphasize how wellbeing researchers should pay attention to people’s housing circumstances when modelling subjective wellbeing.
