ISQOLS Webinar,

"Youth Well-Being and Inequalities in Digital Contexts"

Presenter: Pablo Gracia, Prof. Autonomous University of Barcelona and Centre for Demographic Studies

Wednesday, 18 February

10:00 am EST/4:00 pm CET

Child and adolescent digital use and social media engagement has intensified dramatically over the last years. These major digital transformations in young people's daily lives have carried opportunities, such as unique forms of learning and social connectedness, but also risks, such as internet addiction, distraction and emotional distress. This presentation will address theoretically and empirically the impact of child and adolescent digital use and social media on well-being outcomes, focusing particularly on heterogeneous effects across population groups. First, I will present a conceptual approach to investigate how digital divides are currently shaping child and adolescent well-being outcomes across demographic and socioeconomic groups. Second, I will examine the way digital use shapes mental well-being and educational outcomes from early childhood to late adolescence, with a focus on both digital parenting and intersectional inequalities. Third, I will present multi-level evidence on how social media use shapes adolescents mental well-being outcomes by considering the role of socioeconomic inequalities at the micro, meso, and macro level. Empirical evidence will be based on representative longitudinal and cross-national data from multiple high-income countries. The presentation will conclude with reflections around current and new directions of research on youth well-being, digitalisation and structural inequalities.
