The Sociology department at The Catholic University of America will be hosting an interdisciplinary symposium titled Beauty At Work on May 26-27, 2023. The symposium will share results of the world's first international empirical study of the role of beauty in science, and invites a broader exploration of the role of beauty in our lives and various domains of work.

We invite 500-work proposals for papers or panels via the “submit a proposal” button on our website:workandwellbeingstudy.com/symposiumIndividual papers should be no more than 20 minutes in length; panels are 75 minutes total. Proposals should be oriented to an interdisciplinary audience and should be related to themes such as:

    • Can we define beauty?

    • Is the term beauty outmoded or is it still valuable?

    • What does beauty do to the brain?

    • Is beauty subjective or objective?

    • In what ways is the pursuit of beauty similar or different across industries?

    • What is the relationship between beauty and creativity?

    • How do the aesthetics of workplaces or the built environment affect us?

    • What does beauty have to do with well-being and human flourishing?

    • What is the relationship between beauty and justice?

    • When is beauty misleading? What are the perils of the pursuit of beauty?

    • Is there value in ugliness?

Submissions must be received by January 6, 2023; decisions will be announced by February 1, 2023.
