The 1st Regional ISQOLS Conference- Africa, "Well-being and Happiness in a Democratic World"

3-5 October 2024, Johannesburg, South Africa

We are thrilled to announce the inaugural regional conference organised by the International Society for Quality of Life Studies and the University of Johannesburg.

As we commemorate the 30th anniversary of Nelson Mandela's historic presidency, marking the culmination of South Africa's first free and fair election on 10 May 1994, we invite you to join us for the 1st Inaugural Regional ISQOLS Conference: Africa. This conference will celebrate "Well-being and Happiness in a Democratic World" and take place in Johannesburg, South Africa, from 3 – 5 October 2024.

The conference aims to gather the international community of quality of life and well-being researchers, practitioners, PhD and Post-Doctoral students and policymakers from all continents to share and exchange knowledge with researchers from Africa. Attendees will have the opportunity to exchange ideas, forge connections, and explore strategies to advance well-being goals at continental and regional levels. Our diverse agenda will cover a spectrum of subjective well-being topics including equity, sustainability, culture and leveraging Big Data and machine learning for informed policy-making.

Distinguished keynote speakers are leaders in the field of happiness and well-being studies including Dr Andrew Clark, Chaired Professor at the Paris School of Economics and Director of the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), and Dr Martijn Burger, Academic Director at EHERO and Professor of Happiness Economics at Erasmus University Rotterdam and the Open University of the Netherlands, also serving as Visiting Professor at the University of Johannesburg and Dr Linda Theron, Professor of Educational Psychology, University of Pretoria and Extraordinary Professor: Optentia Research Entity, North-West University.

A pre-conference workshop on the Psychology of Wellbeing is scheduled on Thursday, 3 October (from 9 am to 1 pm). This workshop is designed to inform young researchers and graduate students about the emerging psychological science related to research on wellbeing (e.g., happiness, positive mental health, subjective well-being, life satisfaction).
